Botanical Gardens & Cable Car

From: 66.50

All about the Botanical Gardens & Cable Car.

We start our tour with the MADEIRA BOTANICAL GARDEN, designed by William Reid in the 19th century. The gardens are a living museum of native and rare plants, and you will have incredible views of the entire city of Funchal, including the bay and mountains.

Next, we’ll Visit the MONTE PALACE GARDEN. In the 19th century, the growth of therapeutic tourism in Madeira in winter led to the construction of the “Monte Palace Hotel” due to the mild climate. The then-owner built a palace inspired by the architecture of the Rhine and decorated the garden with small lakes, water jets and winding walkways. The romantic taste of its origin did not change. The current owner embellished the garden with exotic plants such as cycads, often referred to as “living fossils”, tree ferns and native plants from the “Laurisilva” forest, declared a Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Walking through the garden, we can also admire the famous collection of tiles, the oriental and orchid garden and Karp Koi.

Then get ready to take the Funchal CABLE CAR to the Old Town. The view of the capital Funchal with its red and orange roofs, the harbour and the sea is a must.

If you like flowers and gardens, you must join this tour.

Please note: since this reservation needs to be confirmed, you do not need to pay at checkout. Reserve your seat now, and I’ll email you when we reach six paying adults (please expect to receive confirmation 24 hours before the tour).

Madeira island holidays are the ideal getaway all year round. Madeira weather in coastal areas is temperate and mild with no great extremes-although the temperature can drop the higher you go on the island, so whatever time of year you visit, be sure to bring warm clothes when visiting the mountains. Rainfall is higher in the winter, and you’ll probably need to pack a raincoat or umbrella. Madeira’s average temperatures range from 18C in winter to 25C in summer, with sea temperatures being nearly the same due to a warm Gulf Stream that surrounds the Island all year round, 18C to 22C.

The dress code for our tours is comfortable and casual. Dressing in layers gives the most comfort, as you can shed and add items when the climate varies. Consider packing.

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • An all-weather coat
  • Comfortable clothing.

Tours operate rain or shine, but in the case of inclement weather, your Tourist Guide will modify the tour so more time is spent indoors. It never hurts to have an umbrella on hand.

Yes, and we’re even suggesting that.

IN THE AFTERNOON, VISIT MONTE BY YOURSELF

Madeira cable car and toboggan ride:

After visiting the gardens, you can take the cable car to Funchal or take the opportunity to visit Monte on your own.

The Parish of Monte is considered the most beautiful in the city and home to the last reigning monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

But first, have LUNCH in one of the restaurants nearby.

Then, walk to the departure of the famous TOBOGGAN, a unique means of transport for anyone who wishes an adventure ride down through the steep streets of Monte. When you have finished the ride, to return to Monte you can take a taxi. The price of the tour does not include the rides.

Visit THE SURROUNDINGS OF MONTE and its incredible attractions: a public garden and the beautiful Portuguese colonial church with the tomb of Carlos I of Austria.

Now, get ready to take the Madeira CABLE CAR Funchal to the Old Town. The last cable car ride is at 17:45.

Tip: if you want to take the toboggan, do it right after lunch because sometimes they are very crowded and there are long lines—only then, the church and the cable car.
