Overview

If anyone asks me what the GARDEN OF EDEN would be like, well… What you see at the end of this trip could fit it. On this walk, you will experience everything: a Levada, big trees, bridges, aqueducts, tunnels, cascades and small waterfalls. We will start the walk in QUEIMADAS FOREST PARK IN SANTANA  – a delightful little town well-known for its A-framed thatched houses. We will walk from here, following the path along the Levada, under the trees and the mountains, through the old hand-carved tunnels. When you reach the fantastic high waterfall – at the impressive CALDEIRÃO VERDE natural lake, you’ll feel you have arrived at paradise! You can enjoy a reinvigorating swim under the waterfall, relax, savour your picnic, and enjoy the stunning surroundings. You’ll see excellent examples of an ancient-looking forest, which could be the scene of the Jurassic Park films. The hike is majestic, with 100s of photo opportunities! BOOK NOW!

What do you need to bring?Don't forget

Non-slip walking boots and the more waterproof, the better; camera, and a coat or a jumper if it gets cooler.

We also suggest taking your swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and a hat in case you want to take a cold swim in the 25 Fontes “pool”. Only if safety conditions permit.

We provide torches (free), but if you prefer, you can bring your torch or head torch.

Take a bag to carry your litter away with you.

We remind you to bring your picnic and enough water as nothing is available on the route.

A raincoat or poncho if rain is in the forecast.

Walking poles might be a help.

Children:

Parents must bring a hiking child carrier backpack to carry their children under 4.

Good to KnowActivity level

The first part of the walk is smooth going, flat, becoming challenging with up and down sections towards the end. There are fences to protect you from the steep drops. We will cross several tunnels, but the path is easy to walk, except for people with vertigo.

Children: Not recommended for children under 8 years old.

SecurityDon't take risks

Better to go with a guide and relax, instead of getting lost in the mountains of Madeira. Knowing that the mountain guide activates the emergency system is reassuring if you fall or feel unwell. He/she sends a warning and the group’s location to the local authorities, enabling a quick rescue. All well worth the money for the hike.
