The East Madeira Beach & Island Tour offers a perfect combination of beach relaxation and cultural sightseeing. This 8-hour journey takes you to some of the best beaches in Madeira for an unforgettable experience on the eastern coastline.
Begin with a visit to Santa Cruz, where you can stroll along the promenade or relax on the cobblestone beach. Then, head to Prainha, a famous Madeira black sand beach, where you can enjoy a swim. Explore Porto da Cruz, where you can visit the infinite pools with a fantastic view of the northern coast and the sandy beach, one of the best spots for surfing. The local rum distillery has the only XIXth-century steam engine working in Europe. Finally, unwind at the iconic Machico Beach, a famous sandy beach in Madeira, perfect for a swim or a scenic walk through the nearby promenade in one of the most beautiful bays in Madeira and the historical city centre.
This tour includes seamless transportation in air-conditioned vehicles, ensuring you can relax and fully enjoy the day. Optional activities like surfing or snorkelling at some beaches are available for an additional fee, providing plenty of ways to personalise your experience.

That’s why tickets for beach entrances or activities are paid on the spot—we can’t guarantee the sea conditions ahead of time. There are a few steps to negotiate on Prainha beach.
We design our tours to accommodate everyone, and you don’t need to know how to swim to join us. Many of our stops are near villages and towns, offering plenty of opportunities to explore, relax, or enjoy the scenery without entering the water. However, if you choose to visit the beach and swim, please follow these important safety guidelines:
- Know how to swim: If you plan to swim, make sure you are confident in your swimming abilities, as sea conditions can vary.
- Supervise minors: Always keep a close eye on children near or in the water. It’s crucial to ensure their safety, especially on beaches.
- Follow the beach flags: Pay attention to the beach flags when they are present:
- Green flag: Safe to swim.
- Yellow flag: Swim with caution; do not go too far into the water.
- Red flag: Swimming is prohibited due to dangerous conditions.
- Black-and-white flag: No lifeguard is on duty; swimming is at your own risk.
- Assess the sea conditions: If there are no flags, assess the sea conditions before entering the water. Look out for strong waves or rough seas. If unsure, it’s safer to stay out.
- Swimming season (época balnear): Porto Moniz natural swimming pools have lifeguard supervision from May 1st to October 31st. Most other beaches with lifeguards in Madeira are supervised between June 1st and September 30th, though this can vary. Some beaches may not have lifeguards, so it’s essential to stay alert.
- Heed warnings:
- Always listen to your tourist guide/ driver or locals if they advise against swimming or recommend caution.
- If anyone warns you not to swim, respect their advice.
- Never cross barriers or ignore safety signs, as sea conditions can change quickly.
