Overview

Join us for a delightful morning walk along a LEVADA (water channel) and a stroll through a stunning ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN. The Count of Carvalhal built this private estate in the 19th century, and is now owned by the Blandy family, renowned for producing Madeira wine and still residing here. The Quinta (manor house or château) and private chapel are surrounded by plants worldwide, including well-known species like camellia, magnolia, proteas, succulents, and rare ones like Banksia coccinea. Palheiro Gardens is worth visiting every season, but it is at its peak when it blooms with blue flowers. The topiary garden is fascinating, especially the group of peacocks. You may spot Madeira birds like the unique Trocaz pigeon, firecrests, and butterflies. The visit includes tea or coffee and homemade cake in the lovely tea house, where you can watch frogs hopping on and off lily pads. Admire the nearby Palheiro Golf Course and Casa Velha do Palheiro, a Relais & Châteaux Hotel, one of Europe’s best golf resorts. If you adore magnificent old trees and exotic plants from around the world, don’t miss out on this gem! Reserve your seat now.

Good to KnowActivity level

The 30-minute walk along the Levada is easy, and the trail is flat. We walk at a reasonable pace, stopping to take pictures.

After getting the ticket, we will walk downhill for about 10 minutes until the main gardens and, in the end, the same uphill back! Walking in the garden is not difficult because the garden is on a gentle slope, and we will walk leisurely. An experienced guide will explain the history and background of this extraordinary place. Even those who like to wander around will not regret this guided tour.

Those with limited mobility may find walking around in the garden challenging. Well-kept paths access the gardens, but there is some uneven walking on the traditional cobbled paths and steps. Using sticks is not a problem, but wheelchairs may have problems.

Children:

The garden is suitable for children to be accompanied and supervised by adults at all times.
