Overview

The footpath of LARANO offers stunning views, ever-changing scenery and vegetation. It starts in MACHICO and finishes in Porto da Cruz, a lovely little village on the north coast. This old path was, for generations, used by the local people to move from one place to another, often carrying goatskins full of wine or large baskets filled with products from the farms. The views of the dramatic north coast will amaze you, with deep ravines rising from the ocean 300 meters below. Before walking down the steps, you will enjoy the views over the small village of Porto da Cruz and the Eagle’s Rock. Continue until you have reached the infinity pool with great views of the surrounding mountains, Ponta de São Lourenço and sometimes the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Enjoy your swim! Not to be missed. BOOK NOW!

What do you need to bring?Don't forget

Non-slip walking boots, a camera, and a coat or a jumper if it gets cooler.

We also suggest taking your swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and a hat if you want to swim in the Porto da Cruz infinity pool. Only if safety conditions permit.

Take a bag to carry your litter away with you.

We remind you to bring your picnic and enough water as nothing is available on the route.

A raincoat or poncho if rain is in the forecast. Walking poles might be a help.

Children:

Parents must bring a hiking child carrier backpack to carry their children under 4.

Good to KnowActivity level

The path is unsuitable for people with vertigo problems; Parts of the pathway are narrow with a steep drop on one side, but most have a barrier running alongside. • There are some steps and some narrow sections to overcome. • There are bathrooms at the start/end of the trail, but nothing to buy.

Children:

Not recommended for children under 8 years old.

SecurityDon't take risks

Better to go with a guide and relax, instead of getting lost in the mountains of Madeira. Knowing that the mountain guide activates the emergency system is reassuring if you fall or feel unwell. He/she sends a warning and the group’s location to the local authorities, enabling a quick rescue. All well worth the money for the hike.
