Overview
Embark on an unforgettable boat trip to the Desertas Islands, a pristine natural reserve just 24 km southeast of Madeira. This protected archipelago — composed of three islands (Deserta Grande, Bugio, and Ilhéu Chão) — is one of Portugal’s last untouched wilderness areas.
The Desertas are home to rare wildlife, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), seabird colonies, and a rich marine ecosystem. As you approach, admire the dramatic cliffs and wild beauty that earned them a place in the European Biogenetic Reserve.
After around 2.5 hours at sea, we anchor in the bay of Doca, where you can swim, snorkel, or try stand-up paddle in turquoise waters. A Madeiran buffet lunch with one drink is served on board, giving you time to relax before disembarking on Deserta Grande Island for a guided walk with an expert ranger. Learn about conservation projects, the fragile ecosystem, and the island’s unique flora and fauna.
This Desertas Islands boat excursion runs from May to October, departing from Funchal Marina. It is a full-day adventure combining nature, leisure, and discovery — a rare chance to set foot on Madeira’s most remote and fascinating islands.
