Behind the tourWhat travellers say after they’ve done it
I booked this wine tour because I wanted to see a bit more of the island and taste some proper local wines, not just what you find in souvenir shops.
The drive to the north was smooth, and the guide gave just the right amount of info—enough to understand where we were going, but not like a lecture. Upon arriving at the estate in São Vicente, the setting was breathtakingly beautiful. You’re surrounded by green slopes, vines, and this quiet that you don’t get in Funchal.
We began with a short walk through the vineyard, where they explained the grape varieties and how the local climate influences the wine. Then we toured the facilities. It’s not a huge place, but it felt personal. You can tell they care about what they do.
Lunch was the best part. The meat—Madeira’s espetada—was grilled over wood and full of flavour. The wine pairings were on point. We tried whites, reds, and even a rosé. I’m no wine expert, but they were clearly chosen to go with each course, and someone explained each one without overdoing it.
Dessert was passion fruit-based and homemade, followed by a glass of aged Madeira wine. I sat back, looked at the view, and felt like I was doing exactly what I came to Madeira for.
Would I do it again? Yes. It’s half a day, but you feel like you’ve really done something different. Good food, proper wine, and a place that’s not just built for tourists. If you’re looking for something calm, genuine, and worthwhile, this is it.
