Behind the TourWhat travellers say after they’ve done it
I booked this because I wanted a beach day — but not stuck in one place. This tour gave me variety, great views, and a real sense of the eastern side of Madeira.
We were picked up from the hotel right on time, in a comfortable van with AC — a nice touch on a warm day. The guide wasn’t overly chatty, which I appreciated, but gave useful info along the way about the villages and coastline.
First stop: Santa Cruz. I grabbed a coffee, walked the promenade and watched a plane land just above us — the airport runway stretches over the sea, which is wild to see up close. There was time for a quick dip at the pebble beach too.
Next, we visited Prainha — a beautiful black sand beach tucked between cliffs. It was easy enough to walk down, but getting back up to the road was definitely more of a climb. Still worth it. I also noticed a few people driving around trying to find somewhere to park — and failing. I was glad I didn’t have to deal with that.
After that, we stopped in Porto da Cruz. Some people went into the infinity pool, others explored the rum distillery next door — there’s an old steam engine there from the 1800s, still on display. I just relaxed with a cold drink and took in the views. It’s one of the nicest spots on the north coast, in my opinion.
The final stop was Machico — a golden sand beach, which is rare in Madeira. The bay is calm and shallow, great for swimming, and the town has a laid-back vibe. I had a late lunch nearby before we returned to Funchal.
This was a full but easy-going day. We didn’t rush, and there was enough time at each stop to swim, wander or just enjoy the view. I didn’t have to think about driving or parking — just turned up, and everything else was taken care of.
If you’re looking for a mix of beaches and villages with zero stress, I’d recommend this.
