Behind the TourWhat travellers say after they’ve done it
This was my second tour in Madeira and probably my favourite. The west coast feels more rugged, more dramatic — and this itinerary really made the most of it.
We started the day at Seixal Beach. Black volcanic sand, sharp cliffs, and waves that made the whole place feel wild. I managed a quick swim, but even just standing there, taking in the scenery, was worth the early wake-up. Getting there by tour was definitely the right call — I saw cars parked all over the place, some over a kilometre away from the beach entrance.
Next stop: Porto Moniz. I’d seen photos before, but it’s completely different in person. The natural lava pools look like something out of a movie. I didn’t swim — the sea was a bit too rough that day — but others in the group went in. There’s plenty of space to relax and take photos, and the views of the waves crashing into the rock formations were incredible.
Calheta was the most relaxing part. We arrived mid-afternoon, and the golden sand was warm but not too hot. It’s one of the few beaches in Madeira with soft sand, so it was great just to lie down, have a snack, and watch the boats come and go at the marina. I even managed a swim before we left.
The driving was smooth, and the day well-paced. There was always time to enjoy each place without rushing. Best of all, I didn’t have to worry about directions, traffic, or parking — just showed up and let the day unfold.
If you’ve got one day to explore Madeira’s coast, this is the one I’d recommend. You get beaches, pools, mountains, and those perfect west coast views.
