Behind the tourWhat travellers say after they’ve done it.

I joined this tour because I was curious to try traditional Madeira food and see something cultural without it feeling like a tourist trap. I wasn’t sure what to expect, to be honest.

The pick-up was easy — they sent the time by email and were right on schedule. The guide gave a quick explanation of how the evening would go.

We arrived at a restaurant that looked local, not staged. The welcome was warm, and we started with a small glass of Madeira wine. The menu was set, which actually made things easier — no choices to make, just enjoy what came.

When the espetada arrived — beef skewers grilled over open flames — it was hanging from a metal hook above the table. I waited a moment to see how the Madeirans at the next table handled it. Then I did the same — sliding the meat down carefully with a fork and knife, piece by piece, onto the plate below. It was simple, but memorable.

There was also milho frito — crispy fried cornmeal cubes. It was my first time trying it, and honestly, it was one of the best things I ate that night. Hot, crunchy, and full of flavour.

My partner is vegetarian, and they brought out a proper option — not just a side dish, but a full plate. That was a relief.

The show started while we were eating. It wasn’t a big production — just live music, dancing, and people in traditional clothes. At one point, they invited guests to join. Some people danced, others just clapped along.

What I liked most was the balance. You eat, you watch, you listen. There’s time to enjoy without being rushed. And after the dinner, we stopped at a viewpoint to see Funchal at night. It was quiet, not crowded. Nice touch.

I booked this tour on a whim, thinking it might be fun. It turned out to be a good way to connect with Madeira — through food, music, and people who actually seem to enjoy sharing what they do.

Would I do it again? Probably not. But I’m glad I did it once.

Would I recommend it? Yes. If you want something relaxed and genuine.
