Overview

Discover one of Madeira’s hidden gems on this peaceful Levada do Castelejo walk, located in Porto da Cruz, on the island’s scenic north coast. This half-day guided tour takes you along a traditional levada trail through terraced farmland, still cultivated by hand, featuring vineyards, sugarcane, and seasonal crops.

Following the contour of the hills, this path offers panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean throughout the entire walk. It is an ideal choice for those seeking a low-difficulty levada hike with exceptional scenery.

One of the highlights of this trail is the breathtaking sight of Penha d’Águia (Eagle’s Rock), a striking coastal promontory that rises dramatically between the mountains and the sea, visible from several points along the route.

Due to its tranquillity and natural beauty, this Porto da Cruz trail is often described by visitors as one of the most enjoyable walks in Madeira — a quiet and authentic experience that invites you to return.

Good to KnowActivity level

The walk is not challenging, the trail itself is flat, and there is no concern about vertigo. Moreover, we do walk at a reasonable pace, including stopping to take photos.  There are bathrooms at the coffee bar at the end of the trail.

Children: Not recommended for children under 8 years old.

SecurityDon't take risks

Better to go with a guide and relax, instead of getting lost in the mountains of Madeira. If you fall or feel unwell, knowing that the mountain guide activates the emergency system is reassuring. He/she sends a warning and the group’s location to the local authorities, enabling a quick rescue. All well worth the money for the hike.
