Overview

Our tour begins in the Parish of Monte Funchal Madeira, one of the most beautiful areas of the island and the resting place of Charles I of Austria, the last monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. You’ll visit the Monte Church, a stunning Portuguese colonial church surrounded by lush gardens and a charming park.

While in Monte Madeira, you’ll also have the option to enjoy the famous Madeira Toboggan Ride (Not available between August 10 and 17), a thrilling descent through the steep streets of Monte in a traditional wicker basket. To make your experience more comfortable, we will pick you up at the bottom of the Madeira sled ride, eliminating the need to walk back uphill.

After this memorable experience, we’ll head to the Madeira Botanical Gardens, a 19th-century creation by William Reid. This remarkable Funchal garden showcases not only Madeira’s rare and indigenous plants but also species from all over the world, representing every continent. As you explore, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Funchal, its bay, and the surrounding mountains—a perfect stop for garden and nature enthusiasts.

This tour blends history, adventure, and natural beauty, offering an authentic experience of Monte Funchal Madeira and Funchal Botanical Gardens. Don’t miss out—book your tour today!

Additional Notes

This private tour has a fixed vehicle fee shared among participants. The more people in your group, the lower the cost per person. For example, 7 adults pay €33 each. Use the booking form on this page to calculate the exact price for your group.

Tickets for the Madeira Sleigh Ride can only be purchased on-site. Please be aware that waiting times may be long, and the ride will not operate between August 10 and 17 due to the Our Lady of Monte religious festival.

This arrangement gives you the flexibility to decide on the spot whether to enjoy the ride after seeing it in person. Some visitors prefer to simply experience the unique atmosphere of Monte without taking the ride, while others may choose to skip it due to the potentially long queues.

For your comfort, our service collects you at the lower end of the Madeira Sleigh Ride, so you won’t need to walk back uphill.
