Overview
See the best of Madeira Island in three complementary routes that combine coastlines, high plateaus and traditional villages.
The East itinerary reaches the wind-carved headland of Ponta de São Lourenço and the photogenic viewpoints of Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto and Miradouro do Guindaste. In Ribeiro Frio you may opt for the flat Balcões walk inside the MADEIRA UNESCO Laurisilva before continuing to the thatched houses of Santana and the cliff roads around Faial and Machico.
The West itinerary focuses on volcanic scenery and Atlantic vistas: Cabo Girão skywalk, the fishing harbour of Câmara de Lobos that inspired Winston Churchill, terrace valleys at Ribeira Brava, the ridge of Encumeada, the high plain of Paul da Serra, basalt tunnels towards São Vicente. It also includes a relaxed stop at the lava pools in Porto Moniz.
The South itinerary offers a different perspective along Madeira’s sunniest coast. Travel through Ponta do Sol, Moledos, Calheta and Prazeres, continue to the lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo, and descend to the picturesque villages of Paul do Mar, Jardim do Mar and Madalena do Mar. This route highlights terraced landscapes, ocean cliffs and the rural charm of southern Madeira villages.
The Nun’s Valley Half-Day reveals the island’s central amphitheatre: climb from Pico dos Barcelos to Eira do Serrado for dramatic views into Curral das Freiras, a classic Funchal City Tour extension for travellers who want a shorter experience with big scenery.
This package suits Madeira Guided Tours, Madeira Tour Packages and Tours Madeira Portugal searches, offering a flexible way to explore the island over two full days and one half day.

Behind the TourWhat travellers say after they’ve done it
I booked the 3-tour package to get a general idea of Madeira without having to organise everything myself. The combination of two full-day tours and one half-day turned out to be ideal – enough to explore properly, but without being too rushed.
We did the East Tour first, and I was surprised by how different the landscape felt throughout the day. We stopped at dramatic viewpoints like Ponta do Rosto and Guindaste, and walked the optional Balcões trail, which was short and flat with views over the Laurisilva forest. Santana’s thatched houses were very photogenic and made for a nice cultural stop. The route passed through several areas of natural beauty, including Faial and Machico.
On another day, we joined the West Tour, which was more about mountain passes and sea views. The stop at Cabo Girão was very popular — the skywalk there gives you a full view over the cliffs and ocean. We visited small towns like Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava, and passed through high points like Encumeada and Paul da Serra. The drive to Porto Moniz offered great views, and we had free time there for lunch and sightseeing. Swimming in the natural pools depends on timing and sea conditions, but we had enough time for photos and a relaxed break.
The Nun’s Valley Half-Day Tour was shorter, but the views from Eira do Serrado were impressive. We had good weather and could clearly see the whole valley and the village of Curral das Freiras below. This part of the island is quieter and feels more remote.
The tours were well-paced with frequent stops, and the vehicles were comfortable and air-conditioned. Pick-up and drop-off from our accommodation in Funchal worked smoothly each day. In total, we did the three tours over four days, which gave us enough time to rest in between.
If you’re looking for an overview of Madeira that covers coast, mountains and small villages, this is a practical and flexible option. We never felt rushed, and the routes covered a lot more than we expected. Definitely worth it if you want to explore different parts of the island without renting a car.
