Discover rural Madeira with the Maroços Levada Walk, also known as the Mimosa Valley Walk, set above the historical town of Machico. This gentle levada trail takes you through fertile landscapes shaped by generations of farmers.

As you walk alongside this historic irrigation channel, enjoy expansive views of the valley, traditional terraces, and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. The trail is lined with eucalyptus and mimosa trees, which give the area its name and distinct fragrance.

Your guide will share stories about the levada system, which is still essential to agriculture in Madeira today, and introduce you to seasonal crops, local traditions, and natural heritage. This is the perfect half-day walk to slow down, learn, and truly connect with Madeira’s countryside – a route praised by travellers as one of Madeira’s most scenic and accessible hikes.

Behind the WalkWhat travellers say after they’ve done it.

I booked the walk because I wanted something quiet, not too long, and easy to get to from Funchal. It was my first time doing a levada.

When we arrived, the guide was already waiting—friendly, not pushy. We started on a small road and then turned into a dirt path. At first, it looked like a simple countryside walk. But after a few minutes, I noticed I was already breathing differently—slower.

There were mimosa trees all around, and the smell was light but constant. I’m not someone who usually notices flowers, but this one stayed with me.

We passed some locals working on the land, some old stone houses, and a dog barking in the distance. The guide explained just enough — not too much talking, which I liked.

There was a moment when we stopped to look down into the valley, and it was completely quiet. You could hear the water running through the levada, and nothing else. No cars, no phones. I realised I hadn’t thought about work all morning.

It wasn’t dramatic or life-changing. It was just… right. A good pause. A way to reset.

When we returned to the van, I felt calm. Not tired. Just more aware.

Would I recommend it? Yes — if you’re looking for something simple, authentic, and peaceful.
