Better to go with a guide and relax, instead of getting lost in the mountains of Madeira. If you fall or feel unwell, knowing that the mountain guide activates the emergency system is reassuring. Behind the TourWhat Travellers Say After They’ve Done It

I joined the Paradise Valley Levada Walk looking for something calm and nature-focused — and it was exactly that. The trail was flat, shaded, and well maintained, winding gently through forest landscapes without any steep climbs.

The scent of eucalyptus and chestnut trees filled the air as we walked, and the occasional light breeze made it very pleasant. Although you don’t always hear the water clearly, watching it flow beside the path added a peaceful rhythm to the walk. What I noticed most was the variety of green, from moss-covered walls to overhanging branches and the soft ferns by the water’s edge.

Birdsong was constant in the background, especially in the denser areas. It made the whole experience more immersive. The views of the valley opened up at a few points, with small villages in the distance and the red rooftops standing out against the hillsides.

Our guide was friendly and walked at a relaxed pace, making a few stops to share insights about the area and give us time for photos. The group was small, so everything felt easy and unhurried.

Near the end of the walk, we passed a small garden house and noticed flowers in bloom — including bright hydrangeas along the roadside. We also stopped briefly at a local cafĆ©, where it was nice to sit down for a drink before heading back.

This walk is ideal if you want a light, scenic activity that doesn’t feel rushed or physically demanding. It gave me a new appreciation for Madeira’s inland forests, and I’m already thinking about booking another levada trail later this week.
