Behind the TourWhat travellers say after they’ve done it
This was my first proper introduction to Funchal — and it completely changed the way I saw the city. It wasn’t just about walking through streets; it was about noticing details I would have passed by, understanding the stories behind the buildings, and really feeling how much history is packed into such a small area.
We started in Santa Catarina Park, which offers one of the best panoramic views over the city and the port. It was a peaceful beginning to the tour, and a great place to get an overview of Funchal’s layout. From there, we continued through small gardens and tree-lined streets, passing by fountains, traditional pavements and statues that I hadn’t noticed before.
The Cathedral was impressive — particularly the wooden ceiling, made from local cedar in the Manueline style, which I learned is unique in Portugal. A few streets away, the Jesuit College Church was completely different: dramatic, gold-covered woodwork and contrasting chapels, showing centuries of religious influence. I wouldn’t have understood the significance of all that detail without the explanations along the way.
At the Funchal Farmers Market, the atmosphere was vibrant — full of colour, scents, and activity. There were exotic fruits I had never seen before, alongside seasonal local produce, herbs, spices, flowers, and fresh fish. I noticed that some prices were quite high, especially for certain tropical fruits. Our guide explained that this is common in central tourist markets, where prices are often adjusted for visitors. Still, it was fascinating to taste unusual fruits and explore the market’s energy without any pressure to buy. We had time to explore on our own afterwards, which was a nice opportunity to wander freely, take photos, or make small purchases if we wanted to.
We ended the tour in Funchal Old Town, where narrow cobbled alleys are decorated with painted doors and lined with inviting restaurants. I took dozens of photos. Every corner revealed something unexpected — a mural, a colourful doorway, or a beautifully preserved old shopfront.
What I appreciated most was the balance — the tour included history, art, local culture and green spaces, all without feeling rushed. It was accessible, interesting, and well-paced. I’m really glad I did it at the beginning of my stay because it gave me context for everything else I saw later.
